If I want Fleabag, I would watch Fleabag, not read a book that is a bit like it…įortunately, I did persevere because it made the Women’s Prize shortlist and I pressed on – and it is not “like Fleabag“: Martha Friel’s voice was no imitation but distinctive, original and felt terribly authentic. ![]() ![]() And however much I enjoyed Fleabag – and I genuinely love that show and Phoebe Waller-Bridge generally, including her role in the Star Wars franchise which is the best droid ever! – that comparison put me off. I had avoided Meg Mason’s novel, even though it appeared on the Women’s Prize Longlist and Shortlist, because it was recommended to by in Waterstones, on two separate occasions in different stores as being ‘like Fleabag‘. ![]() ![]() ![]() He also runs a one-man on-call tech help service called Tech Hermit. ![]() He's a hyper-disciplined, fastidiously well-organized, highly competent 43-year-old geek who lives rent-free in the basement apartment of a small Baltimore building in exchange for moonlighting as its super. I think I was expecting her to be… more something. ![]() The only thing that felt a little bit underwhelming for me had to do with Alosa’s mom. The story scratched all those itches for me, and for the most part, I felt like they all exceeded my expectations. And I was very eager for a confrontation between Alosa and her father, because that definitely needed to happen! I desperately wanted to know what would happen between her and Riden. I really wanted to know how things progressed with the quest to reach the island where Alosa’s mother, the Siren Queen was rumored to live. I finally read the first book in this series a few months ago, and I knew it couldn’t be long before I read the second (and final) one. ![]() |
